I began teaching voice in 2005 when I was performing the role of Jellylorum (the opera cat) in a production of Cats. A fellow cat, whose dancing and acrobatics took my breath away, approached me about teaching him voice lessons. He wasn’t allowed to wear a microphone in the show because he was told he had “pitch problems”. We sat together once a week over the next year or so to face his fears, and we trained his ear to hear the pitches while also developing a warmer tone with a much larger range. At one point during that time, he auditioned for the same creative team that had hired him for Cats the previous year, and they nearly fell out of their seats! Now this dancer-singer performs in the Broadway and National touring companies of Wicked.... and wears a mic!

"Kathy Calahan's teaching takes me to a place I never knew I could go. Every time I work with her I feel joyful and free. I am always telling her she should write a book because she is so filled with wisdom and brilliant metaphors comparing singing to other aspects of life. She helped me find my true voice, and that celebrating my natural voice is the most beautiful way to sing. I hadn't even planned to perform, but Kathy strengthened my technique and confidence so much that after less than a year of working with her, I took the stage in New York City and performed one of my own songs. The experience went blissfully well thanks to the gifts Kathy had given me."

"There are teachers who are trained to follow established teaching methods and those who train themselves, uncovering a new technique for each new student. This is Kathy's gift. Her instinctual creativity guides her expertise as she seeks to convey new ideas, problem solve, and beguile the best out of her students."
- Alden Pagnaglia

"Kathy helped me sing so much better in just a matter of months!"
- Joe Paglesi

Every voice is different, as is the way each person absorbs new information. Therefore my teaching style changes as I adjust to the specific needs of the student. My overall goal is to help singers experience more freedom, relaxation, confidence, and increased artistry when singing. A singer’s voice is unique, and should be nurtured and celebrated!
